8/27/04 Hiked in to Meysan Lake 8/28/04 McAdie Mallory Irvine 8/29/04 Corcoran LeConte Notes: All the chutes leading up from Meysan Lake have lots of loose and annoying rock. The two popular chutes up to the plateau were blocked by snow (which they probably retain year-round). Fortunately, the snow in the middle chute had melted away from the rock just enough on the left side to squeeze through. The last time I went up to LeConte (in June) the chutes were filled with good quality snow from the bottom to the top. Hiking up the snow in June was ideal (with crampons and ice axe) and made for good glisading. It was far preferable to the loose taylus and boulders experienced this time. The snow that is present currently (Aug 28) is quite hard, icy in spots, and is sun cupped. There are hoards of ravenous marmots around the lake. Be sure to take appropriate precautions. I found a large boulder near my tent that appeared out of reach to marmots. While away from camp I stowed my pack, bivy, etc. on top. I was also able to hang my UrSack from this rock so that my food was out of their reach.
