Mount Winchell (13,775 ft) Log: 8/7/04 01:39pm - Departed Trailhead (lower trail) 02:52pm - Reached Ranger Camp Cabin 06:23pm - Reached Sam Mack Meadow 8/8/04 07:05am - Left Camp 08:50am - Reached T-Bolt Glacier 11:02am - Reached summit of Mount Winchell 11:40am - Left Summit 12:20pm - Exited the East Arete 01:21pm - Reached Lake 12370 02:17pm - Reached Sam Mack Lake 03:07pm - Returned to camp at Sam Mack Meadow 03:58pm - Left Sam Mack Meadow 06:06pm - Reached Ranger Cabin 07:04pm - Reached Trailhead Stats: Time from TH to Sam Mack Meadow (w/25lb pack): 4 hrs 44 mins Time from Sam Mack Meadow to Mount Winchell summit: 3 rs 57 mins (can probably shave 30 minutes off this next time) Time from Mount Winchell back to Sam Mack Meadow (lazy scouting mission): Time from Sam Mack Meadow back to TH: 3 hrs 6 mins Notes: I took a slow pace most of the way leading up to Winchell because I was unsure of the best route. I probably went through far more of the moraine than necessary. It looked like the best route is to follow the snow filled gullies as much as possible. Bob Burd & others dayhiked Winchell from the trailhead to summit in 4 hrs 45 mins (2004 Sierra Challenge). There are some camp sites up by Robinson Lake and the other lake just South of Robinson. I'm not sure if it would be worth hauling a heavy pack up there or not. There was also a space for one tent near the start of the route up Winchell and another on the West end of lake 12370. TH Elevation: 7785 (Lower Trail - Day Parking) Gain from TH to summit: 5990 ft. Notes for Temple Crag - jump off the trail and go between 1st and 2nd lake - above 2nd lake is probably more difficult The chute you took up out of Sam Mack Mdw (to the left) was pretty easy. The chute with the creek running down it appears more difficult (water and snow). Avoid the morraines as much as possible. Maybe try getting up on the East ridge of Winchell right from the beginning to get above the morraine. As you get closer to the East Arete you can move around to the left (South) to jump into the chute (or you can try to go up the ridge all the way).
