Mount Hawkins Middle Hawkins Copter Ridge Mount Islip Mount Lewis 11/19/03 Notes: Originally I had planned on doing South Hawkins as well. With the short days this just didn't end up being feasible so I skipped it and did Lewis (a quick and easy one) instead. Hiking up from the road (to Windy Gap) I went up well to the right of the gully where there was little snow. The gully was full of soft snow and would have been difficult to hike up through. Snow was soft and fairly deep on the Northern slopes where the PCT is. I was able to avoid some of the snow by staying above the PCT at the top of the ridge. In many places on the PCT I was sinking down almost a foot which made the going slow when going uphill. Downhill was not as bad and going back down to the road from Windy Gap was a blast though. I basically skied down on my shoes. It probably only took 5 minutes to get down to the road. I could not find a register on Mount Hawkins and on Islip there was only a notebook under a rock on one of the cement supports. There could have been cans hidden under the snow but not that I could find. I also didn't find a register on Lewis though there was a pile of rocks where one ought to be. After getting back down to the road from Windy Gap I drove over to Dawson saddle and began hiking up Mount Lewis just after sundown. The sunsets on this day and 3 days earlier were quite spectacular. Driving: Used 1 full tank of gas. Took 2 1/2 hrs from Bakersfield to reach parking area below Windy Gap. Road N4 connects between 138 and Big Pines.
