Starting up the trail from the Sawtooth Pass trailhead. 2:03am.
Here we left the Sawtooth Pass trail and took the older rough trail (up the left side of the valley) that provides shorter access to Glacier Pass
Glacier Pass. 3:41am (1 hr 38 min from trailhead).
Some snow was present on the shady side of Glacier Pass
Hands & Knees Pass. 4:58am (2 hrs 55 mins from trailhead).
High Sierra trail junction near the Big Arroyo cabin. 7:08am.
Lack of acclimation begins to take a toll and I start to lag behind
On the summit of Mount Kaweah with Bob & Matthew. 10:57am. Bob & Matthew reached the summit a half hour earlier. For me it was tough going. Not having been above 5000 feet for a month I suffered from a lack of acclimation (at least that's my excuse anyway). My time from trailhead to summit: 8 hrs 54 mins.
I think Bob & Matthew may have been a bit quicker than 8.5 hours. My time was 8 hrs 54 mins. I suppose that wasn't too bad given a total lack of acclimation but at the time I thought it was pitiful. I could not maintain a pace and had to stop frequently during the last hour to the summit.
Bob & Matthew. Matthew only has 24 peaks to go to finish off the SPS list and to become the first to have dayhiked every peak on the list.
Big Arroyo cabin. 1:09pm. From the summit of Mt Kaweah Bob went on to tag 2nd Kaweah. After a short break near the cabin Matthew departed and the three of us hiked out seperately.
1:28pm. Break over now it's time to hike up to Little Five Lakes from Big Arroyo. Without acclimation it was real slow going for me (or so it seemed). It seemed like I had to stop and rest about every 100 feet (not vertical).
3:57pm. Approaching Hands & Knees Pass. I'm now optimistic I may make it to Glacier Pass before dark.
One more pass to go. Glacier Pass is located at the top center of the photo. One must descend down to the lakes (Spring Lake shown) to get there.
Unnamed peak above Spring Lake. From here it has a rather impressive face.
Glacier Pass. 5:46pm. Hurrah! I still have light left!
Looking SE from Glacier Pass. This is the first time I've been here during daylight hours.
Looking NW from Glacier Pass toward Empire Mountain
Arriving back at the trailhead. 6:57pm. I made it with just enough light left to not use my headlamp. Matthew arrived an hour earlier and Bob arrived 20 or 30 minutes after me (he tagged 2nd Kaweah in addition to Mt Kaweah). Since I expected to get out closer to midnight I was rather thrilled to be down by dark.
