Courtney (right) and I at the trailhead parking lot. 1:04pm.
We decided to take the direct path (the snow slope) to Gayley Camp.
We took the direct route up the snow to Gayley camp. This worked rather well though it took longer than expected.
Palisades and the Palisade Glacier as seen from Gayley Camp
Climbing up to the Bergschrund below the U-Notch
Courtney at the Bergschrund on the way to the U-Notch. 5:06am.
We'll cross over here on the right on this soft snow bridge
Looking down the glacier side from the U-Notch. 6:32am.
The chimney route to North Palisade. Let the fun begin! 7:08am.
Looking down from near the top of the first pitch
Snowfield below the summit on the glacier side of North Palisade
On the ridge just past the top of the chimney. The summit of North Palisade is visible in the rear center. The gendarmes here are bypassed by dropping down to the left.
Courtney on the summit of North Palisade. 9:32am.
10/1/05 - My last entry with Paul Allegretti, Joel Wilson, & Mark Thomas (Pellucid Wombat)
Starlight Peak as seen from North Palisade. The "milk bottle" is clearly visible.
Looking down at the Palisade Glacier just before leaving the summit. 9:42am.
Looking over at Polemonium from the opposite side of the U-Notch. Ok, who brought a route description?
This is the path we took (most certainly not the easiest way) on our 2nd and 3rd pitches.
Time to rappel back to the U-Notch. Good anchor but an awkward start.
Looking down the south side of the U-Notch. 10:48am.
Looking down at the U-Notch from our first or second pitch
Courtney climbing the first or second pitch on our way up to Polemonium
Belaying Courtney from the top of our third pitch (not far from the summit)
Summit of Polemonium Peak. Mount Sill is visible in the background. 1:57pm.
Descending the knife-edge on the east side of Polemonium. 2:02pm.
Because of our heavy packs we opted for a rappel from the notch below the knife-edge
Now up this short chute to the glacier/snowfield on the east side of Polemonium Peak
Courtney in front of Apex Peak and near the top of Sill's North Couloir
6:49pm. At the bottom of the snow slope not far from Third Lake.
Logjam crossing at the outlet of Third Lake. 7:01pm.
Finally back to the overnight trailhead. 9:17pm. Then a long drive home returning at 2:15am.
