Starting the hike up the road to Heaton Flat. 5:38am.
The trail up to Iron Mountain follows a long ridge as seen here.
Just past the Allison trail junction the trail gets loose and steep
Rattlesnake Peak. The hike up to this HPS peak is similar to Iron Mountain except that there is more brush.
Mount Baldy as seen from the Iron Mountain trail
9:06am. Summit of Iron Mountain. It took 3 hrs 28 mins which included a 10-15 min break.
Summit cairn on Iron Mountain and Mount Baldy in the background
Dang! Jim beat me by 9 minutes! Guess I shouldn't have taken than 10 minute break.
Didn't notice it at the time but this register was placed by Eric and Alan Kleinsasser
Ross Mountain. This HPS peak is reached by hiking up and over Mt Baden-Powell from the north and returning back the same way.
There are some interesting sections along the Iron/Baldy ridge.
An interesting portion of the Iron-Baldy travere
Someone left a short rope here but it's not really needed
Hmmmmm. Brush or snow? Guess I'll figure out which way to go when I get there.
At first I headed left to avoid the brush, but without crampons the icy snow was too slippery to stand on. The only way across was to search around for weaknesses using embedded stones or holes. This was something of a mental exercise trying to plot a course.
These snow patches look so innocent but were fiendishly hard and icy.
Ok. Enough with the snow. Maybe the brush will be better. I am forced to pick between the lesser of two evils.
Looking back toward the Iron/Baldy ridge. Iron Mtn is to the left and Mt Baden-Powell is visible in the far right.
Pine Mountain (left of center) and Dawson Peak (right of center)
Working my way up the final portion of the ridge
The summit of Mount Baldy is now visible as I pass over West Baldy
Fortunately this icy snow was low angle and had some texture which gave me just enough grip to keep my balance.
One last look at Mount Baldy before it gets dark.
8:09pm. Seems much the same as it did when I started. Dark!
Almost stepped on this millipede shortly before arriving back at my car.
