First glimpse of the conditions above: surpisingly little snow in the bowl
6:56am. The Baldy bowl glows in the early morning light.
Kurt's Rock. The trick here is to walk up the rock without using your hands: trivial for Kurt, somewhat more challenging for the rest of us.
Richard gives it a go. The exposure is intimidating.
Now it's Kent's turn. This rock has defeated many climbers.
A few photos and then we take a short break in the warm comfy hut
Plaque in recogition of John Wedburg's 765+ ascents. This is truly an extraordinary accomplishment.
The hut also has a kitchen and running water. It even has electricity from some solar charged batteries.
As seen from the hut, the left side of the bowl had better snow coverage
We follow the trail over to the South end of the bowl
Just after entering the wooded portion beyond the bowl we ascend up firm snow (with crampons and ice axes) to the ridge
Ah, wonderful manzanta. Oh wait, I hate mazanita.
Red, Yellow, Blue. Nice color combo. You can tell that it got windy because everyone has their hoods up. Once we reached the ridge we took our crampons off but it would have been better had we kept them on a bit longer.
Alan awaits the arrival of the rest of the group on the summit
From left to right: Bob, Rick, Richard, Kurt, Alan, Matthew, and Kent.
Kent and Matthew crampon down the snow. The rest of us used the scree
Frank and Sarah joined us just before we got back to the hut
Just another minute or two till we reach our cars. Bob, Alan, Richard, Kurt, Matthew
Final group shot: Rick, Bob, Kurt, Richard, Kent, Matthew, Alan.
