Looking back at my tracks. Snow fairly ideal at this point. No sun on the snow yet.
Started following this showshoe track, but then noticed these snowshoes had claws. Hmmmm.
Making slow progress here I opted to head straight up and over this area.
Working my way up above the difficult spot to better snow
From above Mehrten Mdw, Alta Peak and Tharps Rock Gully now in view.
Stashed my snowshoes at this point and switched to crampons/ice axe. Should have just stuck to the snowshoes though. Beyond this point I mostly postholed.
I stayed closer to the left of the gully. I always feel safer with trees around.
No more trees. I'm feeling vulnerable. Recent avalanches in other places have left me feeling paranoid. I try to stay close to the rocks but this is steeper and only makes things more difficult.
Finally, topped out above the gully. Now just a bit further to Alta's summit block (center)
Alta's southern ridge (left) and Tharps Rock (right)
Alta Peak's east ridge (foreground) and the Great Western Divide (rear)
Did some glissading but then postholed most of the way down to where I stashed my snowshoes.
I caught up with the marked trail on the way out
