Whitney Trailhead. Road was clear and open. At least a couple dozen vehicles were at the Portal.
Another look at the Ebersbacher Ledges from below
Start of the Ebersbacher Ledges is at the pine tree in the middle of the photo.
Some hikers were going up on the South side of the creek
Looking down at Lower Boy Scout Lake on the way up Thor's NE slope. I practiced some self arresting here and made a bit of a mess of the new snow.
Look at all the new snow. To my surprise, there was a couple more feet here than there was a few weeks ago.
This is probably the easist route up from LBSL. It looks like a thin ledge from below but it's not. There's quite a bit of room. Around the other side of the reddish rock is the sloping flat area that leads up to Thor's summit.
LBSL as seen from below the "triangular shaped reddish rock".
Just around the corner from the reddish rock you pop out on the flat sloping area of Thor Peak. The summit is toward the right.
So much nice snow. Looks like a great spot to ski/snowboard. Just don't ski over the side.
Looking toward Trail Crest. The switchbacks work their way up the slope in the rear. You can just make out the uppermost part of the trail near the ridge.
Icecycles suspended below an overhanging clump of snow
Thor Peak's highest point - register can is at the very top
Summit register is new and only dates back to 10/24/2003.
Only one other party (of two) had been up since Bob Rockwell's group in November.
Lone Pine Peak (rear) as seen from Thor Peak. The ridge in the foreground leads up to Mount Irvine.
Mount McAdie (rear center). Consultation Lake (frozen) can be seen in the lower center.
A view of the saddle (Arc Pass) between Mount Irvine and Mount McAdie. Consultation Lake is in the lower right.
Lower Boy Scout Lake (as seen from the summit of Thor Peak)
Here's a good view of the route up to the Russell-Carillon saddle from UBSL. Mount Russell is in the upper left, Mount Carillon is in the upper right, and Upper Boy Scout Lake (UBSL) is in the lower left.
Here's where I began my glissade. Chunks of harder snow made it a bit bumpy.
Climbers approaching/departing Upper Boy Scout Lake
My ascent footprints to the right and my glissade path on the left
Looking back up at my glissade path. I stopped in the middle to avoid a rock and then slide down further.
