A typical section of the road beyond McMurry Meadows.
The Red Lake trailhead. There's room for about 4 to 6 vehicles.
Looking down at the Red Lake trailhead parking area.
Awesome view of Split Mountain as seen from the unnamed lake below Red Lake.
Another view of Split Mountain as seen from the unnamed lake below Red Lake.
The small glaciers below Split Moutain. Notice all the loose debris that has fallen out of the couloirs onto the snow/ice. Not sure if this really qualifies as a glacier anymore but it's labelled as such on the topo.
The neverending rock on the approach to the North ridge. It's worse coming down!
Once you get closer to the top of the North Ridge you are presented with some pretty impressive ridges. This is a view to the North.
A search and rescue crew member searching for a fallen climber.
Looking down at the saddle between Split Mountain and Mount Prater.
Looking down at one of the couloirs. Notice all the loose rock.
Looking down at the Split/Prater saddle. Search and rescue chopper is in center.
Looking down at the path up to the North Ridge. It's rather loose here and although you won't go falling thousands of feet, a slip here could easily result in injury. I think started down a bit to the right in the more stable rock.
Another view of the loose area. It's not that bad, but you do need to be careful if you don't want to get bruised up.
The search and rescue helicopter ferrying in gear and supplies.
Got back to the trailhead about an hour after dark.
